Use XHTML and CSS

If your design is a compliant one (conforms to XHTML and CSS published guidelines) and you have used the technologies effectively, then you will have a very small footprint on the world. What I mean is that your pages will contain far less HTML than other sites not using this method. Your pages will use much less tables… in effect ‘code bloat’ will be reduced to a minimum.

n summary, using XHTML and CSS greatly improves readability of your code for search engine spiders and maintains a good content-to-code ratio without going beyond file-size and word-count limits.

This is a direct quote from google:

“Thank you for your email. I understand that you want to know whether valid HTML and CSS help in better organic search and AdWords ad rankings.

Please note that clean HTML codes and CSS help improve rankings because they make it easier for our crawlers to find information. Sites’ positions in our search results are determined based on a number of factors designed to provide end-users with helpful, accurate search results. These factors are explained in more detail at http://www.google.com/technology/index.html

So, make your HTML and CSS Valid, by using the guild lines at w3.org

Use a good TITLE

The title of your pages should be descriptive and explain the contents of the page well. Using the default title of Home, Index, Default is a pointless excercise. The title will give a visitor an idea of the what the page is about and also gives a search engine spider an idea of how to classify the page. This is easily the most important single element on the page.

URL Naming

Page names and domain names play in important part in SEO. Go do a search on google for something, and you can betcha that most of those 1st page results will have the keywords you searched for in the domain name, or the URL somewhere. Go figure!

H1, H2, Italics and BOLD

H1 is a another very important tag. It is the visual equivelent of the TITLE tag and treated with high regard by search engine spiders. You should most definitly be using your keywords within this tag.

Also try to get your keywords once in bold and then once in italics. Were trying to let the search engines know that these specific keywords are EXACTLY what this page is about.

Link Text

Link Text / Anchor text should always try and be descriptive. A visitor should have some idea of what they are going to find on the end of that link and a search engine is no different. When linking within content (outside of main navigation), use a short 3 to 5 word descriptive phrase to link your most important pages. When a spider follows the link to your page it should have an understanding of the content and your title tag, h1, etc, etc on that page should mirror this.

CONTENT

Well…. this could be a very very long and in depth sub-section, but instead I will keep it brief and deal with the questions later. On your page you should try to have a healthy amount of descriptive, keyword rich content. Dont just rely on the title of the page and other factors already mentioned. You should aim to have your keywords in the content as frequently as you can, without it sounding robotic, or being un-natural to read. This is known as keyword density. All search engines differ in what is a good figure for keyword density, but all have a maximum so dont go over the top. Remember, this is where the ‘trial and error’ comes in.

DO NOT FORGET, CONTENT IS KING! YOUR CAN HAVE THE MOST SEXY WEBSITE, WITH ALL THE FEATURES YOU COULD DREAM OF, BUT IF THERE IS NO CONTENT OR THE CONTENT IS IRRELEVANT THEN YOU WILL NOT RANK!

Another direct quote from google:

Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don’t match your query. So, Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search.”

How to Write GOOD Content

So, how do you?

What defines good content?

Good content has many attributes and we need to ensure all these attributes have been checked before we publish.

Let’s take a look at what we need.

  • Unique information
  • Scannable structure
  • An answer to a question
  • Quality of grammar, punctuation and spelling
  • Readability

The above sounds fairly obvious I know but they do take some thinking about. It’s easy to get them wrong and hard to get them write, sorry, I mean right.

Unique information

Most subjects on the web have been covered so you really do have to dig deep and ask yourself what you can bring to the web that belongs to you. The answer to bringing unique content to the web is to write for your readers. The language you use determines the kind of visitors your site will attract.

I write to owners of websites that operate a business, mostly non-technical or DIY. I do assume some knowledge of the web but aim to provide information that someone without the skills can learn from. I don’t always get this right so feedback is always welcome, something good content is carved from. When you know your readers, you listen to their feedback, you hear their questions, you write good content. It’s that simple.

Scannable Structure

Not many people read the web but everyone scans the web. Don’t argue about it, just accept it. So, how do we convey our content then? Well, the answer is to use small and on-topic paragraphs with careful use of headers and subheaders. The headers really do make a document scannable and must be used correctly. If the topic changes from one paragraph to the next either reconsider the header or create a new one.

I’ve aimed to make this article a good example of scanning. I take the 9 o’clock news approach, which is; strong introduction, short summary of content, the content itself, a closing summary. All this is done on a scannable level with lists, headers and concise paragraphs.

An answer to a question

I spend a lot of time reading content on the web and many of the articles don’t actually answer a question I was asking. Sometimes, a header or link text can imply there is something to learn by reading the content. Often though, I’m left short-changed.

If you’re hot on a subject and have something to offer, write the content in the form of an answer to a question. This is best done by describing the question to help clarify why people are there, make the reader feel like they belong, then follow with a solid answer.

The aim of the content is to provide people with homework to do, something they can take away from your site. Get this right and they’ll be back for more.

Quality of grammar, punctuation and spelling

Punctuation and spelling can be auto checked in an online thesaurus or tool such as Microsoft Word. They will clear up the obvious but you will still need to proof read the information before publishing to be sure.

Nothing destroys authority on a subject quicker than poor use of the language. To readers that do know how to use the language it can smack of stupidity. Now that doesn’t mean you’re stupid and the information within holds no less value on the subject you’re writing about but if you get the language wrong, the reader will have less faith in you. This devalues the content. Which is NOT good.

Being grammatically correct is so important so always get your content checked by others to ensure you communicate effectively and keep the value high.

Readability

Being readable is about not over explaining things. Your good content isn’t a novel, it’s a readable document providing information to people who are interested in learning the subject you’re writing about. Stick to the point.

Keep your personality within the words as this shines through. Your perspective on a subject is why people are reading. Chances are the subject has been covered before and it’s you they’re reading, so be yourself.

Readable is about pace of the points. Pace of the points means hitting the readers with the key solutions you’re writing about in a steady and consistent way. Where there is consistency in the structure of the information, the scanners can scan and the readers can read. This suits everyone.

OK, Great, I’ve learnt loads of useful stuff, but back to the subject of backlinks!

Why should I care about backlinks?

Backlinks are important because each time someone links to your site it counts as a “vote” for it, moving it higher up in the search engine results pages. As part of a search engine optimization strategy you should aim to build backlinks up over time. The more backlinks you accumulate the better placed in search engines like Google, Yahoo! Search and MSN Search your site will be.

How do I find out how many backlinks my site has?

Each search engine has backlink look-up tools that you can test by typing in link:www.yourdomain.com into the search form. Just replace the yourdomain.com part with the URL for your site or webpage. You need to use linkdomain:www.yourdomain.com for the Yahoo! search engine and you can use either tag for the MSN Search Engine.

My understanding is that the linkdomain tag will provide all the sites linking to your entire domain name including subpages/directories, while the link tag will only show backlinks for the one webpage. Generally you should find a higher total for the linkdomain look-up.

Why are my Google backlink numbers so low compared to Yahoo! and MSN backlink counts?

No one really knows the answer to this except perhaps Google employees. I’ve asked a lot of web marketing experts and everyone has theories but so far we have no concrete answers. Most people report that Google backlinks are often a list of the least relevant (low PageRank) backlinks or a miss-mash collection of random backlinks. I initially thought perhaps only what Google deemed as authority site backlinks would be listed but so far this has been disproved because plenty of obviously non-authority sites show up in backlinks.

Another quandary you will probably come across is sites with a good PageRank, like a 5 or 6, having very low backlink counts in Google. It boggles the mind trying to figure out what Google is doing so generally I advise people not to make any assumptions based on the Google backlink counts. Watch them to see if they go up each update and leave it at that.

How can I get more backlinks?

In so many, many ways. You might like to try my upcoming “How to build traffic for free” course for a good lesson on backlink development (stay tuned to this channel), but in a nutshell you can do the following sorts of things:

  • Do link exchanges with other sites and blogs (Such as this one)
  • Make comments on other blogs - contribute to the conversation, DO NOT SPAM (Such as a post on this one)
  • Post in forums
  • Post in newsgroups
  • Use article marketing
  • Build more websites

If you do all of the above you will slowly build up a huge network of backlinks. Remember your reputation counts, so don’t don’t simply post links to your site all over the web like a spammer. Take part in the conversation and build a good reputation at the same time as you build backlinks.

Thanks for reading, and I hope this information was helpful to all who took the time to read it!

Common SEO Questions and Answers

Where should I host my site ?

If you are aiming at worldwide traffic, the server location does not matter.

If, however, you are aiming at visitors from a specific country, then you should host your site in that country.

If you are aiming at a search term with a specific location, such as “London Web Design”, then we suggest that you host your site in London/UK.

Starting with a new domain ?

If you already have an existing domain that has some age to it, then you don’t have to think about a new domain.

If, however, you are creating a new site, it is best take into acccount Google’s philosophy.

1. Words in the name.

In the old days, webmasters would register a domain using the words that were going to be the main search term,
e.g. “small blue widgets” would become www.small-blue-widgets.com

This should be avoided at all costs.

Even if the company is called Precision Widgets, don’t fall into the trap of creating a split word domain
e.g. www.precision-widgets.com, but www.precisionwidgets.com is fine.

2. Dot com or country codes ?

If you are aiming at visitors from a specific country, then we suggest that you register your domain name as, e.g
www.name.co.uk
www.name.es
www.name.de
